Book Blurb

A news anchor intern has it all planned out, and love isn’t on the agenda.
Brooke Endress is on the cusp of her lifelong dream when her younger sister persuades her to chaperone a mission trip to El Salvador. Packing enough hand sanitizer and bug spray to single-handedly wipe out malaria, she embarks on what she hopes will be a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

But Brooke is blindsided by the desperation for hope and love she sees in the orphans’ eyes. And no less by the connection she feels with her handsome translator. As newfound passion blooms, Brooke wrestles with its implications for her career dreams.
Ubaldo Chavez, teacher and translator, knows the struggle that comes with generational poverty. But he found the way out – education – and is determined to help his students rise above.

When he agrees to translate for a mission team from the United States he expects to encounter a bunch of “missional tourists” full of empty promises. Yet an American news anchor defies his expectations, and he finds himself falling in love. But what does he have to offer someone with everything?

My Review

When Brooke Endress agreed to go on a mission trip to El Salvador with her sister, she was not exactly thrilled about it. Little did she know how much that mission trip would change her life. Throughout their trip, she found herself falling in love with the orphans and street children, as well as a certain translator, Ubaldo. When she gets home she struggles with her desire to become a news anchor and her strong desire to return to El Salvador. Is this truly what God wants for her life, or is it just a passing feeling?

I am so glad I got a chance to read this book. It was wonderful. I fell in love with Brooke and Ubaldo, and it gave me a glimpse into some of the struggles that children in other countries have to face. I could relate to how Brooke would fall in love with the orphans at the orphanage, and how she wanted to help, but wasn’t quite sure what that help looked like for her. It was beautifully written, and again very relatable, I believe everyone that reads this book will agree. I love how the love of God, and His plan for each person is shown in this story. It is a romance, so if you love romance novels, you need to read this one! I highly, highly recommend it!

Restoring Love by Jennifer Slattery–Book Review

restoringlove_n174111Restoring Love (Back Copy)

Mitch, a contractor and house-flipper, is restoring a beautiful old house in an idyllic Midwestern neighborhood. Angela, a woman filled with regrets and recently transplanted to his area, is anything but idyllic. She’s almost his worst nightmare, and she s also working on restoring something herself. As he struggles to keep his business afloat and she works to overcome mistakes of her past, these two unlikely friends soon discover they have something unexpected in common, a young mom who is fighting to give her children a better life after her husband’s incarceration. While both Mitch and Angela are drawn to help this young mother survive, they also find themselves drawn to each other. Will a lifetime of regrets hold them back or unite them and bring redemption along with true love?

My Review

When Angela moves in next door to one of Mitch’s house flips, he thought she was a bit strange, but then she came to church and they form an unlikely friendship. They both have a passion for the same family that lives in one of Mitch’s rentals across from Angela’s house. As they set about to show Bianca and her family Christ’s love and grace, they find they have feelings for each other. Will they be able be able to move past the past and have a meaningful relationship? Will they be able to lead Bianca and her family to the Lord, or will she turn them away for good?

This was a wonderful story of how God’s grace can restore anybody, regardless of what they’ve been through. The characters were very well developed. I really appreciated how Slattery took common problems that people face in today’s world, and showed how no matter how bad it seems, God can always restore that person by His grace! I think it’s safe to say most people nowadays know of someone who has some of the same challenges that each character in this book faces. There’s Angela who struggled with drugs and promiscuity in her past, but found God’s grace and by His grace is turning her life around. Bianca is a single mom who is struggling to provide for her family after her husband is imprisoned and just feels like her life is falling apart. Finally, there’s Mitch, a divorced man who is dealing with his drug addict son while his unsaved business partner is making business difficult.  I found myself immersed in this book, and I didn’t want to put it down. If you need a good book, check this one out! I highly recommend it!
