Striving to be the Best Help Meet–Chapter 2

Chapter 2 – A Merry Heart

In this chapter, Mrs. Pearl shows how important it is to be joyful and have a smile on our face. She points out that before you were married you smiled and giggled, and were overall merry and your husband was attracted to that. Fast forward about five years and you smile less and are stressed more, and complain about every thing that goes wrong in the house and with the car. Instead of moping around and always having a scowl on your face or being grumpy, try to focus on smiling throughout the day and especially when your husband is around. It’s also contagious, think about it if you are joyful and cheerful when your husband walks through the door after a long day of work it may just cause him to be joyful and cheerful as well. Now this needs to be legitimate, don’t just plaster a fake smile on your face, because he’ll know it’s fake. There will always be times we just can’t smile, but striving to be cheerful will help your attitude and your overall outlook on life as well. I find that when I focus on trying to be cheerful, I’m nicer to my children (I don’t lose my temper as quickly), I’m nicer to people in general, I feel better, etc. In order to be joyful and cheerful, we need to stop feeling sorry for ourselves and focus on the positives in life for example, while you might be tempted to complain about the siding needing cleaned or the trash needing taken out you could stop and be thankful that God gave you a house that has siding and a husband that will eventually take out the trash when he gets a minute from his busy schedule. After all the Bible says, “A merry heart doeth good like a medicine.” (Proverbs 17:22).  I want to emulate joy and cheerfulness not just for my husband, but for my children as well. I want them to grow up not thinking of me as grumpy old mommy who is constantly complaining, but rather I want them to think of me as a Godly woman who had the joy of Jesus and was cheerful despite her circumstances and was content with what she had at any given time in her life. I want to have a merry heart don’t you?
